Joseph’s story

Joseph Folan graduated from Â鶹ӳ» with an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science, and now he works as a database programmer at clinical contract research organisation Medpace. Joseph spoke to us about his time at Â鶹ӳ», and how he’s increasing his knowledge of coding and innovative biotechnlogies.

How biomedical science helped Joseph’s career in database programming

Joseph Folan works at Medpace as a Database Programmer, where he's recently been working on studies to test additional treatments for COVID-19.

What made you choose biomedical science at Â鶹ӳ»?

“When looking at multiple universities, I really liked the feeling I got from Â鶹ӳ». Brighton has always been a great place to be and the course offered looked really appealing.”

What was your standout memory of your time on the course?

“I particularly remember a workshop we had alongside our Human Anatomy module. We spent half a day in the anatomy lab, looking at different cadavers. I found it both fascinating and helpful in consolidating the knowledge we had learnt in the module.”

What were you proudest of?

“The friends I’ve made for life and our collective hard work. I’m proud of what we all managed to achieve.”

What experiments/modules were your favourite?

“I didn’t realise I would at first, but I found myself really enjoying some of the biochemistry modules that were taught as part of the course. In particular, the cell signalling modules, which were really visual and mechanistic throughout teaching. They suited my way of learning and I was able to pick them up really well.”

What are you doing now?

“Currently I’m a Database Programmer at a CRO called Medpace.

“Although quite new, I’m really enjoying it and have been working on some studies which are trying to test additional treatments for COVID-19.”

How did your degree at Â鶹ӳ» help you in your career?

“My Biomedical Science degree has given me a deep understanding of ‘Human Science’. I am now increasing my knowledge of the tech/coding sector where I hope to integrate my degree and be part of innovative biotechnologies.”
