Develop your understanding of what corruption is, where and why it proliferates, and what we can do to counteract it.
This course is the only full-time Masters in the UK addressing issues of corruption. You’ll explore:
- how different disciplines define corruption and how this can lead to different anti-corruption approaches
- specific examples – from systematic abuses of power by parties, politicians and civil servants to small-scale, petty misdemeanours
- the role of business, unpacking the problems surrounding corruption and exploring potential solutions.
Peer-to-peer interaction and collaboration are key elements of the course and create a rich learning experience. Sharing knowledge and opinions allows us to look at issues from different perspectives. On graduation, you’ll have an understanding of corruption in many different contexts. You’ll also have the practical tools to design and put in place anti-corruption responses.
You’ll learn from academics and practitioners dedicated to interdisciplinary research and policy impact in our world-leading Centre for the Study of Corruption
We understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision. We’ll make all reasonable efforts to provide you with the courses, services and facilities described in this prospectus. However, if we need to make material changes, for example due to government or regulatory requirements, or unanticipated staff changes, we’ll let you know as soon as possible.

Modules
Full-time and part-time study
Choose to study this course full time or part time, to fit around your work and personal life. Modules for the full-time course are listed below. For details about the part-time course, contact us.
Core modules
Core modules are taken by all students on the course. They give you a solid grounding in your chosen subject and prepare you to explore the topics that interest you most.
Autumn teaching
Spring and summer teaching
Options
Alongside your core modules, you can choose options to broaden your horizons and tailor your course to your interests. This list gives you a flavour of our options, which are kept under review and may change, for example in response to student feedback or the latest research.
While it’s our aim for students to take their preferred combinations of options, this can’t be guaranteed and will be subject to timetabling. Options may be grouped and if so, students will be able to choose a set number of options from the selection available in any particular group.
Spring teaching
- Corruption and Public Power
- Corruption in Business and International Development
- Corruption in Comparative Context
- International Anti-Corruption Actors
- Internship
- State Capture and Grand Corruption
Internship
In the spring term, you have the opportunity to take up a three-month internship. Here, you put the theory learned in the seminar room in to practice.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
We’ll do our best to provide as much optional choice as we can, but timetabling constraints mean it may not be possible to take some module combinations. The structure of a small number of courses means that the order of modules or the streams you choose may determine whether modules are core or optional. This means that your core modules or options may differ from what’s shown here.
Check back in January 2025 for the modules running in the academic year 2025/26.
American Student Loans and Federal Student Aid

- Video transcript
My name is Lina.
My name is Giorgi.
I’m Anjana Wickremaarachchi.
I’m Ris, I study Master of Corruption and Governance at the Â鶹ӳ».
[Students walking around campus. Text on screen: What’s the best bit about the course?]
My favourite element of my course, that was the internship. Each intern is picked carefully. Each and everyone who wanted to become an intern or do the internship, they have the space to do so.
[Text on screen: Where did you work?]
I was given an opportunity to work with one of the most influential organisations in this field of study in the UK. I was working with Control Risk and also alongside the Council of Americas. Centre of International Private Enterprise in the Anti-Corruption Unit.
[Text on screen: What are the benefits of doing the internship?]
Networking is one of the best things. In the modern world, it's all about network. You watch professionals, you meet professionals who are way ahead. I have met people from all parts of the world. You learn how to research. Basic writing skills or how to push out a good research paper. I started to get the sense of what we learn academically in the classroom, in the practical world.
It's good because it helped me to actually know how I want to move my career. I might get a job from networking just by saying, I’ve come from the Â鶹ӳ». If anyone wants to study about corruption, I would 100% recommend do an internship every time. There is no better place to go. Come and study at Â鶹ӳ». That all good? Thank you so much. [Ris gets up from chair]
